How Your Emotions Affect Your Health
Do you know that many scientists agree that our physical body remembers traumatic events even if our mind forgot about it? I am a strong believer in the mind-body connection and even based my thesis on this topic.
Our thoughts and emotions affect our body, and the state of our physical self-effects our mind. If something bad happens in one’s childhood and it goes on for a prolonged period of time, stress can weaken the immune system and result in an increased risk of certain physical illnesses.
For example, researcher Madelon Visintainer suggests that there is a link between a sense of helplessness in childhood and the development of cancer in adulthood. Her research found that helplessness is viewed by the body as an inability to resist the development of cancer.
The good news is that we can influence our biology by taking small steps. Working through your difficult emotions and memories can help alleviate the psychological hurt, bringing your body into restoration mode. This, in turn, can lead to positive changes in your physical health. The opposite is also true. Taking care of your body, sending yourself loving and positive messages lead to better mental health.
