Practice of self-compassion
Researchers on self-compassion L.Shapira & M. Mongrain found out that speaking kindly to yourself as a good friend just for a week (!!!) decreases depression symptoms and increases feelings of happiness even after 3 & 6 months’ intervals after the “intervention”.
It’s possible to start with little steps, on-the-spot interventions throughout the day. For example, “Oh, I spilled the milk!” situation. Before you attack yourself “What a stupid klutz”, take a breath and imagine what you’d say if a little child did it. Say to yourself something like “It’s ok, everyone spills milk or something sometimes, it’s only human”. Smile to yourself and enjoy that cuppa!
Today is Monday, can I challenge you to be friendly to yourself until the same time next week?
